We had a long drive to and from today's sites/sights, but it was worth the time spent. The weather was perfect for a boat trip on calm waters. We cruised along the coast of Kekova Island admiring the crystal clear water and looking for visible ruins in the "sunken" city. Due to volcanic activity, sarcophagi, mosaics, stairs, and tombs from the ancient Greek settlement are now submersed, but still visible. There were only seven travellers (including us) on our boat, and I was the only one who opted to swim. |
The modern city of Demra was once known as Myra. En route to the Myra Archaeological Site, we passed a harbour mentioned in the Bible. The highlights of the ruins of Myra are the Roman theatre and the temple-like facades of the tombs carved into the rock cliffs behind it.

I'm sorry that I can't offer much insight Naiela, as it has been four years since our visit and I was far from an expert then. Kekova and Demra are about 25km apart from each other, and Demra is 140 km from Antalya where we began our day. The day that we enjoyed would likely not be possible via public transit as a single day, but may be accessible over two days. Myra and Demra are the same place, but Myra will often refer to the old city ruins that tourist visit within the larger, current city of Demra. The church is only 2.5km from the ancient ruins. I can say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Turkey and highly recommend it as a tourist destination. Good luck and happy travels!
