August featured some big UFC heavyweight bouts, but I was disappointed that Daniel Cormier was unable to finish his impressive career by reclaiming the title. Instead, he suffered a torn cornea from an accidental, illegal eye poke that greatly hampered his effectiveness. O'Malley, too, was unable to perform to his standards due to a fluke reinjury of his foot. |
The Canucks defeated the Wild in a special qualifying round to make the playoffs for the first time in five years, then knocked the defending Stanley Cup champion Blues out of the post-season. Aside from watching NHL and other sports, not much changed in August. We continued to walk everyday, deciding whether to walk away from the water... ...or towards the water. We spent more time appreciating our own yard. I continue to enjoy spotting curios throughout the community... ...and even in our own yard. We walked in Duncan. We hiked some of the Maple Mountain trail network for the first time. Then we explored Osborne Bay Beach. We hiked Cobble Hill Mountain three times in August. We went to Shawnigan Lake, visiting Old Mill and Masons Beach Parks. We did the hike through Cees & Miep Hof Memorial Park to the beach. Much of lower Vancouver Island witnessed a massive lightning storm. Fortunately after two rainy days, we went back to nice summer sunshine. I enjoyed watching FC Bayern Munich's historic perfect run to winning the Champions' League with 19 year-old Alphonso Davies becoming only the second Canadian to win it. Visiting Victoria as tourists was such a success in July that we decided to explore Nanaimo this month. I once again took so many photos that I created a separate blog entry to document our day of discovery. We picked lots of plums and a few blueberries in our yard, blackberries throughout the community, and a single peach while in Honeymoon Bay. We ate some "Loaded Cookie" ice cream, some neapolitan ice cream, and our beloved Espresso Almond Fudge ice cream, but mostly we stuck to vanilla... with blackberries, and some with peaches... as well as some with apple pie... and then some with both peaches and blackberries... We walked at the Cowichan Bay Estuary. We watched some TV. We kept reading. A small selection of movies was released in August. We played tennis a few times and Lisa continued to cycle. Just like that, another month has passed and summer is winding down.

Last month's exploration of Victoria was such a success that we decided to once again play the part of local tourists, this time in Nanaimo. Our first stop was Nanaimo's "signature park", Maffeo Sutton. From the park, we took a $7, seven minute passenger ferry to Newcastle Island, traditionally known as Saysutshun. We circumnavigated the entire island in a counterclockwise loop. Kanaka Bay Beach Midden Bay Newcastle Channel After taking the ferry back, our next destination was "The Abyss". Westwood Lake Long Lake After shopping and eating at Costco, we headed to Pipers Lagoon Park with views to Shack Island. As we headed for home, we passed Departure Bay Beach. According to Lisa's watch, we walked over 20 kilometres today!
Aside from Maffeo Sutton Park and Costco, we had never been to any of these sites. We have plans to discover more of Vancouver Island in September. #ExploreLocal "Oceans Apart From Ordinary" |
