We watched a bunch of movies, including six biographies and lots of standup comedy specials.
By our West Coast Canadian standards, August was very hot. We spent much of our time outside, on the deck or in the hammock, but many afternoons were actually too hot and forced us back indoors. We were happy to welcome Kyu Min and two of her children for a surprise visit one afternoon. We finally made it to Alderlea Farm Cafe (rated #1 on TripAdvisor) for wood oven pizza and a farm-fresh burger & salad. We continued to treat ourselves at home, enjoying seasonal offerings like local corn and picking tons of blackberries and some plums. We also picked up a couple of zucchinis from Farmer Mason's stand. Finally, we tried Authentic Pizza. We walked at the estuary twice this month. We ate lunch at Aastha Devotional Indian Restaurant on our 27th wedding anniversary before enjoying mocha cake at home. We checked out a mixed doubles tournament at the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club. We sailed out of Duke Point for the first time, so we took the opportunity to do two new nearby hikes. First we hiked Cable Bay Trail. Next up was Jack Point & Briggs Park. Afterwards, we took a sunset ferry to the mainland where we were house and dog sitting in New Westminster for a week. Instead of once per day, we temporarily reverted to two walks each day; many of which were to Queen's Park. It's great when our time in the Lower Mainland allows us to visit old friends! My buddy, Joe, treated us to fish and chips at Pajo's at Rocky Point. Lisa brought us goodies when she joined us for dinner, a stroll, and a great visit. Happily we were able to see Karyn, Kyra, and Avery before and after their trip. We got to know Jersey and Jovey pretty well. Of course we always see Lisa's mom and Auntie Janet while we're over; this time we went for lunch at Tamarind Hill. Another day, we even took the dogs we were watching, Jovey and Jersey, to play with the dog, Stella, that June was watching. Sheryl gave me a selection of beers from Sidney's Small Gods Brewing Company, so I enjoyed them over the course of the week. We were able to celebrate my sister's birthday with her on the 26th. We took the opportunity to take some family photos. Our final night in New Westminster happened to correspond with the first ever "Farewell to Summer Fireworks Festival", so we strolled the riverside promenade just before sunset, then waited to enjoy the show. We played tennis five times in August, including twice at Queen's Park. We watched a bunch of movies, including six biographies and lots of standup comedy specials. We finished "Billions" and moved on to "Black Sails". The much anticipated debut of "House of the Dragon" was a huge disappointment, but we enjoyed "The Terminal List". I read four books in August.
