Here are some highlights from an otherwise disappointing year...
People needed Christmas more than usual this year. Our daily walk became very festive. Even in December we had great hiking weather so we explored still more routes up Cobble Hill Mountain. Beach days aren't the same in December, but they're still good. With no better alternative, we continued to make the most of the comforts of home. We enjoyed some meals provided through CDMS (Lisa's work) and chocolates from Lifeline (her volunteering). I decorated a Christmas tree for the first time since 2017 and for the first time in our current home. We enjoyed our third annual Cowichan Bay Sail Past. The only thing better than treating ourselves, is being treated by others! We were moved by the thoughtfulness of our friend Karyn and her daughters who sent us yummy homemade treats. We had some great weather towards the end of Fall! We hiked Cobble Hill Mountain again mid-month. Santa safely visited Cowichan Bay and its residents. Autumn ended with rainbows. December 21st marked the first day of Winter, and right on cue, we had a snowstorm that knocked out our power for twelve hours. Everyone seems to agree that enjoyable meals and snacks have become more important during the Covid-19 pandemic. On the 23rd, we made yet another trip up Cobble Hill Mountain; this time in the snow! We had a quiet Christmas Day at home as BC had restrictions in place for travel to different regions as well as severely limiting social gatherings. We hiked around Polara Hill on the 28th. We watched some television programming - including some one off seasonal music specials. We continued to read novels. Thank God for sports in 2020! I relied on my love of sports for entertainment more this year than ever. In December I watched loads of NFL football while steamrolling to another first place regular season finish in my fantasy league (before running out of luck in the playoff rounds). The new NBA season began and the IIHF World Junior Championship is underway. I also enjoyed UFC 256. As usual, we watched some movies. We saw 16 Christmas movies - mostly new this year, and all new to us. Finally, we ended the year with some very specific programming. On the 31st, we ordered take-out to support our local pub, operated by generous, community-minded owners who have struggled through a challenging 2020. They rewarded us with some complimentary bubbly! We are so grateful that we got to travel so much of Philippines in February as no further travel was possible this year. In a "normal" year, we'd likely have gone on three more trips, resulting in six more visits to the Lower Mainland to see family and friends. Instead, we spent a very secluded year with almost no social interactions at all. Lisa and I did explore much more of Vancouver Island and renew our appreciation for each other's good health and company. Here are some highlights from an otherwise disappointing year... Here's to a brighter, healthier, more travel-friendly 2021 full of hugs - CHEERS!
