While in Belize in January, I received a YVR Deals alert that flights to Huatulco were discounted, so we booked for ten nights in April. About a month later, we were notified that our flights had changed, leaving us with longer layovers and cutting our trip short by a day. Instead, we extended our trip to eleven nights and were able to solve the layover problem for the return leg (we thought). While in Mexico City airport going south, we asked for food vouchers and were accommodated with Starbucks during our wait. We flew to Mexico on the 14th, arriving in the afternoon. |
We had read how honest the cab drivers are in Huatulco and how easy taking a taxi is due to set, posted rates. I had downloaded the rate chart in advance for reference. Upon arrival, we were prepared for a 180 peso fare, but were informed that the rate was now 580 pesos. I showed several drivers the posted, current flat rate of 180, so they changed their story to it was now 190 pesos... per person. Eventually we agreed to split a cab with another couple for 325 pesos per couple. Later on we would confirm that the rate is supposed to be 180 pesos, and it is going TO the airport, but the drivers basically hold tourists hostage upon arrival - not a great first impression. |
On the 16th, we took a taxi to Conejos Beach.
It took almost no time for us to establish a routine for our vacation, rising in time for a street food breakfast before heading to a beach, then returning to our airconditioned room to enjoy cold beers in the afternoon, before heading out around dusk for dinner.
Observation #3: Sustained 38+ degrees weather is (too) hot!
On the 19th, we walked to Chahue Beach again. This time I went in the water and we explored the breakwater pier.
That evening, our room lost power at 7:35, so we were allowed to sleep in a different room with working air-conditioning.
After a week of Mexican food for every meal, I was happy to order a special of the day that featured lentil soup and schnitzel.
On our last full day in Huatulco, we made our third and final trek to Chahue Beach. Of note, for much of the day, the entire region suffered a water supply issue that resulted in no water to flush toilets.
On the 25th, our journey home began...
