Since Lisa and I love sightseeing, we decided to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary with a mini-trip full of exploration. While waiting for the ferry to Gabriola Island, we wandered around Nanaimo's harbourfront and seawall. Our first stop on Gabriola was Descanso Regional Park. Galiano's highlight was the Malaspina Galleries Sandstone Rip Curl. The replicas of ancient First Nations' petroglyphs at the Gabriola Museum interest me, but they raise many questions. It turns out that Coats Marsh Regional Park features a lot of mucky wetland... go figure. We pushed on, stopping briefly at Brickyard Beach. In the far South-East corner of the island, we ate a picnic lunch while enjoying the views from Drumbeg Provincial Park. Having completed the South Road portion, we continued our loop, driving past Silva Bay (and its marina) and continuing along North Road. The tree enclosed portions were our favourite, and we saw several deer with their fawns. Sandwell Provincial Park was our final Gabriola destination. Even close to home, it's fun being a tourist!
