We began the day by heading to Graceland. The whole time we've been in Memphis, I've been thinking of my late Auntie Kathi, but especially today at Graceland. She was the biggest Elvis fan I've known, and I can't believe how much I miss her. After seeing where Elvis wound up, we drove to Tupelo, Mississippi to see where he was born. Then we took the Natchez Trace Parkway from Mississippi, through Alabama, and back into Tennessee. This was by far the most enjoyable driving of the trip as the speed limit is lower than on the interstates and no commercial vehicles are allowed. We find it amusing that places like this where people rave about the natural beauty so often remind us of what it's like all over at home - we are definitely spoiled by the greenery, trees, and nature that are so abundant in BC. We made it to Nashville and I was in a great mood. After seeing Music Row and driving around much of the downtown core, we needed a place to spend the night. Today's kilometre count reached 592! As it turns out, there is a very limited amount of rv accommodation in Nashville, and despite the ads that read, "Just minutes from downtown", they are 20 miles away. Naturally, another wicked rain storm came up as we were trying to negotiate the highway system that would get us there and it became yet another stressful drive with limited visibility and "ponding water" everywhere. The late night check-in when we arrived at a terribly inconvenient location did not allow wifi access nor debit/credit payment and they had reserved one of the most expensive spaces for us. We ended up "boondocking" (this is an RVing term we've adopted that means to park somewhere unofficial, without hook-ups) behind a closed gas station. Instead of properly setting up the bed, etc. we slept with one eye open constantly expecting to be asked to leave. On the patrol officer's second pass, we rose for the day with aching backs and headed back towards Nashville proper. |
