Just 171 kilometres put on the rv today as we had a short jaunt into Memphis. A screeching cricket sound had developed from under the hood, though and I suspected trouble with a belt. We found a mechanic who immediately identified the problem as our water pump and said it would cost around $250 to fix if he had the time to do it, but that he was extremely backed up and closed all weekend. I mentioned that we'd just had work done on the rv and that gave him an idea... He checked to see if the previous mechanic had tightened the 4 bolts that hold the pump in place; he had not! The bolts had been loose and had been rattling out more and more, to the point that we were fortunate not to have lost any. Once the mechanic tightened the 4 bolts, the sound went away. He even refused payment (and/or a beer from our 'fridge)! We found an rv park close to downtown and connected the electric to run the ac for Vecsey as it is smokin' hot down here. Then we headed out to explore Memphis on our bikes. We discovered that the entertainment section of Beale is pedestrian only so we had to lock up our bikes while we strolled up and down Beale, but otherwise, the bikes allowed us to cover ground more quickly and easily than on foot. We visited Sun Studios, "The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll", and saw the Lorraine Motel where MLK Jr. was assassinated. We biked all along the Mississippi River Greenbelt and Riverside Drive where there are some gorgeous, big homes. In the evening, the 80 year-old rv park owner drove us to Beale so we could see it at night. We ate catfish, redbeans & rice, a grilled shrimp poor boy, fries, and hushpuppies - I love southern cooking! Beale is a different beast after dark as the drinking and music really take over. |
