We began our tour of Bruges by walking through Minnewaterpark, past the Lake of Love, to Begijnhof monastery and almshouses. We continued to the oldest wooden house in the city, St. John's Hospital, Church of our Lady of Bruges, the city palace, and St. Savior's Cathedral. Markt Square is beautiful and impressive, featuring an 83 metre belfry tower, the Bruges Beer Experience museum, & the provincial court. Nearby Burg Square was also lovely, including the 14th C city hall, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Liberty of Bruges. The Rozenhoedkaai and Bruges Canals corner is the most photographed spot in the city for a reason. We ate a curry chicken baguette here. We walked as far as the Jan Van Eyck Square. With our specific sightseeing goals achieved, we wandered more shopping streets and enjoyed coffees and ice cream. We deliberately took a long way back, passing the Smedenpoort, and drinking a Kaiser beer in the park as we walked along the canal. Later, we enjoyed our third coffee of the day and went for an evening walk that included taking in the carnival. I was happy to have seen so much on our first day in Bruges, as we woke to rain the next morning. This allowed us a more leisurely start to the day, sleeping in a little longer before having our morning coffee. The rain passed, allowing us to begin our walk through the park (in the opposite direction from yesterday) at 10:40. Eventually we cut back to the city centre to buy groceries, have a second cup of coffee, and once again enjoy Markt Square and Rozenhoedkaai. We took a break to check e-mails and to have a nap, before heading back to the central sites yet again. Despite walking to and from the same locations as yesterday, we took different routes whenever possible. We returned to the most scenic location for another curry chicken sandwich and a smoked salmon with pesto panini. After our third coffees of the day, we walked "home" through side, residential streets.
