Today may have been the best day of the trip so far, and was certainly Vecsey's favourite. Colorado continues to be very dog-friendly, so Vecsey accompanied us to some incredible sights today. We began by exploring the Garden of the Gods and its interesting red rock formations, including "The Balancing Rock". Next was a stop at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings to check out the architecture of the Anasazi, or the "Ancient Ones". We were pleasantly surprised that Vecsey was allowed inside the rooms with us. We briefly saw the historic downtown of Manitou Springs in the Pikes Peak region before continuing South (traveling another 304 kilometres today) to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It's been a cooler, damper summer than usual here so the creek is still flowing - much to Vecsey's delight. She loved splashing in the creek and then climbing the largest sand dunes in North America. We had sun for our sightseeing in the morning, cool, rainy weather for the drive, and then clearing skies as we climbed the dunes. We stayed the night in the park and were able to see the stars at night. Vecsey definitely slept well. |
